Nurse Residency
MU Health Care's Nurse Residency Program is a yearlong program that provides education, support, and professional development to help new nurses gain confidence and competence as they transition from student to professional nurse.
At MU Health Care, we are committed to creating an outstanding employee experience, fostering a culture where everyone feels included and valued, and supporting our nurses through learning, growth, and change. The Nurse Residency Program helps new nurses build meaningful connections, strengthen clinical practice, and develop the skills needed to thrive in today's healthcare environment.
In conjunction with unit-based orientation, Nurse Residents meet at monthly seminars that include:
- Lively discussion of clinical topics and real-world patient care situations
- Hands-on experience with equipment and clinical skills
- Active participation in simulation-based learning experiences
- Development of communication, delegation, leadership, and teaching skills
- Self-care and well-being strategies, including work-life balance, stress management, resilience, and professional growth
- Networking and collaboration with peers from across the organization
- Participation in an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Project that is presented at the Nurse Residency Graduation Ceremony
Throughout the program, nurse residents are encouraged to actively engage, share their unique perspectives, and contribute to a supportive learning environment. By investing in professional development, patient safety, continuous improvement, and peer collaboration, the Nurse Residency Program helps prepare nurses for long-term success while supporting MU Health Care's mission to save and improve lives.

Preceptor Training and Development
The Preceptor Fellowship Program is designed for experienced clinical staff with exemplary performance. It consists of two, 4-hour classes. Learners must commit to attend both classes for completion.
Part 1: Precepting and Challenges
Part 2: Insight and Feedback
Target Audience: Any clinical staff member who orients new staff to unit or department policies and procedures.

CARE
Mentoring new nurses is a vital contribution to the success of MU Health Care. Preceptors are integral parts to helping new nurses feel welcome and supported.
DELIVER
With the patient at the center of our focus, preceptors help ensure new nurses learn the skills necessary to deliver the highest quality care possible for our patients.
INNOVATE
Preceptors are encouraged to develop new ways to address challenges in training new nursing staff members. Orientation requirements are based on the latest evidence-based practice guidelines and are updated accordingly to provide the best start for our new nurses.
SERVE
